WINCHESTER — The Treasure Valley Community College men's basketball team defeated Umpqua Community College 103-91 in the season opener for both clubs at the UCC gym on Friday.
Freshman Eliseo Nieves, a 6-foot-2 post, scored a game-high 26 points for the Riverhawks (0-1). First-year player Trevor Clemo recorded 14 points and nine rebounds and sophomore Kyle Kromminga added 12 points. Freshman Ledarius Stennis had 11 for Umpqua, which led by four at halftime but was outscored 55-39 in the second half.
The Chukars (1-0) made a 12-point run in the second half and began to pull away with about eight minutes remaining.
Center Tyler McKee scored a team-high 24 points and Terriel Thomas added 20 for Treasure Valley (1-0), which owned a size advantage. The two teams combined for 47 turnovers.
The Riverhawks next play in the Dale Bates Tournament in Eugene, which begins Dec. 11. UCC opens with the Chukars.
