Douglas County jobless rate up slightly

The unadjusted unemployment rate in Douglas County rose slightly in October, reaching 14.2 percent, according to figures released this morning by the Oregon Employment Department.

The jobless rate increased from an adjusted 13.8 percent in September. That rate was down two-tenths of a point from the original 14 percent estimates released last month. The high for the year was the 18.5 percent recorded in March.

Douglas County has the third-highest unemployment rate in Oregon, behind Crook County at 16 percent and Harney County at 15.3 percent. Deschutes County, with a jobless rate of 13.6 percent, fell just under Douglas County's rate.

Among Southern Oregon counties, Josephine County had an unemployment rate of 13.5 percent, followed by Coos and Klamath counties at 12.4 percent, Curry County at 11.9 percent and Jackson County at 11.4 percent.

Among western Oregon counties, Linn County had the next-highest rate at 13.6 percent.

Oregon's unemployment rate in October was 10.7 percent, while the national jobless rate was 9.5 percent.
