Varnum
A man wanted on a felony warrant has been arrested, according to a Douglas County Sheriff's Office news release. The public had been asked for help in finding the suspect.
On Sunday evening, the sheriff's office received information as to the possible whereabouts of Nicholas James Varnum, 24, of Roseburg. Varnum was wanted on a felony parole violation warrant.
At about 11:55 p.m., sheriff's deputies went to a residence on the 400 block of Quail Lane in Roseburg. Varnum was taken into custody without incident and lodged in the Douglas County Jail.
Besides the parole violation, Varnum was charged with first-degree burglary, first-degree theft and second-degree criminal mischief.
Earlier that same day, deputies investigated a burglary in the 100 block of Village Drive in Roseburg. The victim reported forced entry into the residence and missing property, including a computer and some tools. Some of the property was found in the residence where Varnum was taken into custody. The case is still under investigation.
In an unrelated incident, Varnum is a suspect in a Nov. 14 high-speed chase, Winston Police Chief Scott Gugel said this morning.
“I have an officer interviewing (Varnum) right now,” Gugel said. In that incident, a Winston police officer tried to stop a car with the wrong license plates on it on Highway 42, according to a news release previously sent out by the Winston Police Department.
The driver sped off down Lookingglass Road and then through rural roads in the Melrose area near Roseburg. He later lost control of the car on Cleveland Loop Drive and ran off into the woods. The suspect was reported to be possibly carrying a firearm.
Charges are pending against Varnum for his alleged involvement in the chase, Gugel said.
