Myrtle Creek curves throw holiday travelers for a loop

Several motorists traveling on Interstate 5 were involved in accidents Thanksgiving evening at the infamous Myrtle Creek curves.

One accident happened about each hour from 5 to 8:30 p.m. at the sharp curves near the northern Myrtle Creek exit.

Three single-vehicle crashes were reported on the southbound side of the freeway and one multiple-vehicle crash was reported on the northbound side. Three happened at Milepost 109 and one at Milepost 108.

No major injuries were reported.

An Oregon State trooper on duty Friday morning said the area is historically prone to accidents, which have elevated with a combination of weather, driving and lighting.

“We're getting a lot of additional crashes lately,” OSP Trooper Kevin Van Atta said.

Last Friday a seven-car pileup happened in the same area when the lead vehicle hydroplaned across standing water. Several people were taken to the hospital.
