The body of a 71-year-old Arizona man was found Saturday in the woods northeast of Sutherlin, after his vehicle apparently got stuck in the mud, police have reported.
At 2:21 p.m. Friday, Douglas County Emergency Communications was advised that Frank Sjursen was overdue in the Douglas County area, according to a Douglas County Sheriff's Office news release. Sjursen had left his home in Arizona Wednesday and was en route to the Seattle area.
Sjursen was last contacted at 9:47 p.m. Wednesday when an Oregon State trooper stopped his vehicle on Interstate 5 northbound near Milepost 137 in Sutherlin, the release said.
After Sjursen failed to arrive at his destination in Washington, an attempt to locate was broadcast to local law enforcement agencies in the Douglas County area.
At 6:38 p.m. Friday, Sjursen's family told the Douglas County Sheriff's Office that Sjursen's vehicle was equipped with a vehicle locate system. The system was activated and coordinates were provided. A Douglas County sheriff's timber deputy along with search and rescue personnel were called out to try to locate the vehicle and Sjursen.
At 12:05 a.m. Saturday, the vehicle was located on a remote forest road about 15 miles northeast of Sutherlin in an area called Coon Creek/Harness Mountain. Sjursen was not located with the vehicle. The vehicle was locked and there were no signs of foul play. The vehicle appeared to be stuck in the mud and unable to be removed without help.
After the vehicle was located, search and rescue workers searched the surrounding area.
At about 11:21 a.m. Saturday, search and rescue workers located Sjursen. He was found dead in a creek drainage near the area where his vehicle was found. Sjursen's family was in the area helping with the search and was notified.
There are no signs of foul play involved in this incident.
