Brrr: Cold blast hits Douglas County

How cold was it? Some Roseburg area residents awoke to frozen pipes this morning as the low temperature dipped to 18 degrees overnight.

An upper-trough weather pattern brought colder temperatures to the region Sunday. The high temperature reached only 40 degrees Sunday in Roseburg and it began cooling off again before 4 p.m.

At 10 p.m., the thermometer registered 30 degrees. Eight hours later, it had dipped to 18 degrees.

Although cold, it was 10 degrees off the record low for the date. The record low is 8 degrees set in 1972.

Today's high temperature is expected to reach around 35 degrees, under sunny skies, according to the National Weather Service in Medford. It will be mostly clear tonight, with an overnight low of around 18 degrees, with a light north wind.

Allow a trickle of water to drip out of faucets to prevent pipes from freezing. Open cabinet doors to allow warmer air to reach unprotected pipes under sinks.

A cold northerly flow will bring colder than normal temperatures to the region tonight. A weak shortwave trough is predicted to move down from Canada on Tuesday, maintaining cold overnight temperatures.

High temperatures are expected to remain in the mid- to upper 30s through Thursday. On Friday, a westerly jet stream is expected to move into the region, bringing milder conditions and a chance of showers. The high that day is expected to reach 43 degrees.
