David Hamilton carries a Christmas tree that was dropped off to be recycled at the Douglas County Landfill. Christmas tree recycling is free at drop-off areas around Douglas County.
When all the gifts have been unwrapped and that once-lush fir is starting to look kind of dry, this year's Christmas tree can find new life as mulch or be enjoyed by wild animals.
Douglas County residents can bring Christmas trees to various local drop-off locations provided by Roseburg Disposal Company staring Dec. 28. The recycling service is free.
Trees can be dropped off through Jan. 8 and should be bare of ornaments, flocking, stands, lights and any other decorations aside from tinsel.
“This has been a service provided by the local business for many years and is a great gift to the community that is much appreciated,” said Chris McCullough, Douglas County waste reduction manager.
Additionally, all Douglas County transfer stations, which collect yard debris year-round, will also be accepting Christmas trees. The Roseburg transfer station, 376 West McClain Ave., is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday.
Transfer stations in Camas Valley, Glide, Reedsport, Yoncalla, Oakland, Tiller, Glendale, Canyonville, Elkton and Myrtle Creek operate between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday.
“As always, your tree along with any other yard debris and woody material can be recycled for free at any one of the county transfer stations,” McCullough said. “At each of these transfer stations, you may sort your waste from your recyclables, thus saving the county money and preserving natural resources.”
Douglas County Public Works will turn into mulch any Christmas trees it receives. The mulch will then be available for pickup at the Roseburg landfill, also off West McClain Avenue, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday.
The mulch is free to those who are willing to load it up themselves and $ 15 if landfill staff assist.
Wildlife Safari plans to put any tree it receives to use in wild animal enclosures during a Jan. 16 event. Those who drop off their trees at the drive-through wildlife park can get a two-for-one coupon to the event in exchange for donating their trees.
