Roseburg's UCDC receives grant for counseling

Umpqua Community Development Corp. was awarded a $50,000 grant Tuesday from the Paul G. Allen Family Foundation.

The money will be used in the nonprofit agency's free foreclosure counseling program to help distressed homeowners rework their mortgage terms and be able to stay in their homes. The Roseburg agency seeks to assist 700 families and individuals.

The grant was among $4.6 million handed out by the foundation to 66 nonprofit agencies throughout Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Alaska and Montana. Umpqua CDC was one of 18 agencies that shared $1.4 million awarded in Oregon.

The foundation was started by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, who owns the Portland Trail Blazers and the Seattle Seahawks. Between 1990 and 2009, the foundation gave out $404 million.
