Truth of Youth: What has been the biggest change in your lifetime?

“The biggest change I can remember were the changes after 9/11.

The security in this country became tighter, and people felt more vulnerable in their own country. It changed the way Americans think about the rest of the world. It also drove some people to be more aware of what is happening in the world and nationally than they were before.

Now we screen more carefully at airports and borders got tighter. Sept. 11, 2001, changed how we thought and acted in the United States.

I think these were the biggest changes in my lifetime.”

“The biggest change that I have seen in my lifetime relates to all the technological advances we have achieved in the last 17 years. I think the great advances in technology have become so mainstream that they have changed how everyone in our society functions. Computers and cell phones were once something that very few could afford to have; now they have become so small and inexpensive that almost everyone has one.

Every home being connected to the World Wide Web is as common now as a television set was 20 years ago. Pay phones are a thing of the past and text messaging is a quick way to stay in touch.

Encyclopedias were the way to research and now the Web offers answers in an instant. Shopping is often completed without a trip to the mall. Paying bills and writing letters don't have to include a trip to the post office. Filing taxes used to be a gruesome task, but now it can easily be completed without picking up a pen or paper.

We are able to connect instantly to the whole world and find out anything with the click of a mouse, and I am sure in 17 more years the changes will just keep happening.”

“While many things have changed in the world in the last 16 years, I'd have to say my biggest personal change came with my family moving from South Carolina to Oregon.

I moved here in the summer of 2008 after living in Greenville, S.C., for all of my life.

I had gone to a small private school with about 500 kids total since I was 4, so when I was put into the public school system my sophomore year at Roseburg High (where 500 kids is the size of one grade), I was absolutely terrified.

It took some time for me to get adjusted, but I like it so much better. I was also leaving most of my family in the Carolinas, so that has changed how often I get to see them, but I cherish the time I do get to see them more.

About a year ago, I realized that this move was a change for the better, and I've never been happier.”
