Body found along bank of Umpqua River

ELKTON — The remains of an unidentified person were found Friday afternoon on the bank of the Umpqua River, police said today.

At about 3:35 p.m. Friday, deputies responded to report of a body found at a ranch in the 16000 block of Highway 38, according to a Douglas County Sheriff's Office news release.

The property owner had been checking his fences when he discovered the body near the high waterline of the river. He then called police.

Sheriff's office deputies and detectives responded to the scene. Investigators recovered the remains but are unable to determine the gender due to advanced decomposition, the release said. Investigators only were able to determine the person had long, black hair with gray streaks and had been wearing an Oregon Beavers sweatshirt.

The cause of death is not known at this time, the release said. An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday.

Anyone with information about this person is asked to call the sheriff's office at 541-440-4471 or the tip line at 541-957-2099.
