Riverside Classic gymnastics meet set Feb. 27

ROSEBURG

The Anne Patterson Riverside Classic gymnastics meet is scheduled for Feb. 27 at the Douglas County Fairgrounds.

Level 4 competitors will begin their warmups at 8:30 a.m., Levels 5-6 at noon and Optionals at 4 p.m. Admission is $8 for adults, and $5 for seniors and children.

MEDFORD

The Umpqua Valley Gymnastics Team traveled to Medford on Jan. 30 to compete in the State of Jefferson Meet hosted by Southern Oregon Gymnastics.

Level 4, 7-8 Age Division — Sydnie Johnson received a first place on vault with a 9.3, a 9.0 on bars for third, a first on beam with a 9.425, a 9.0 on floor and was first in all-around with a 36.725. Gwenyth Bell placed in the top 10 in A-A.

Level 4, 9-10 — Morgan Ball placed second on vault with a 9.4, first on bars with a 9.1, second on floor with a 9.25 and first in A-A with a 36.55. Savanna Hubbard received a 9.4 and placed second on vault, 9.15 and a first on bars with a 9.15, first on floor with a 9.3 and second in A-A with a 35.2. Amy Lenaris placed second on bars and received a 32.875 in top 10 finish in A-A.

Level 5, 7-10 — Kiah Finlayson won bars with a 9.0, was second on beam with a 9.675, received a 9.05 on floor and placed second and won A-A with a 36.225. Gabby Freeman won beam with a 9.725, was first on floor with a 9.3 and second in A-A with a 35.775. Bryn Finlayson won vault with a 9.0, received a 9.025 on beam, was third on floor with a 9.05 and compiled an A-A score of 35.775 for second.

Level 5 — Maranatha Singleton received a 9.0 on bars, placed second on floor with a 9.2, and scored 35.475 in A-A. Gretchen Bell placed second on bars with a 9.0, a 9.025 on beam, a 9.15 on floor and finished with a 35.875 in A-A. Whitney Jackson placed third on vault with a 9.0 and had an A-A score of 35.2.

Level 6, 12-and-over — Autumn Carrillo finished with 34.65 in A-A. Kristin Potter was third on vault with a 9.05, and placed in the top 10 in AA.

HILLSBORO

Roseburg linebacker Lucas Corder has been selected to play for the South team in the 2010 Les Schwab Bowl All-Star football game on June 26 at Hillsboro Stadium.

Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.

The contest features the top graduated seniors in Class 6A and 5A. Corder was a first-team all-state linebacker for the Indians, who lost to West Salem in the second round of the 6A playoffs.

Marty Johnson of state champion Sheldon is the head coach of the South. Other Southwest Conference players selected were quarterback Jordan Johnson, offensive lineman Derek Nielson and tight end Curtis White of Sheldon, defensive lineman Brett Wallan of South Medford, linebacker John Tardieu of Grants Pass and linebacker Cory Haggans of North Medford.

Ken Ingram of Hillsboro is the head coach of the North.



LOOKINGGLASS

The annual Lookingglass Block Run is set for March 6 at 10 a.m. Runners and walkers can choose between the 2- and 5-mile courses around “the block” through the countryside. The course starts and finishes at Lookingglass Elementary.

The entry fee is $20 with a long sleeve T-shirt before March 1 and $30 after. Cost is $10 without the T-shirt. Proceeds benefit the Roseburg, Joseph Lane and Fremont cross country teams.

Ribbons are awarded for the first 25 finishers of each race.

PORTLAND

The Southern Oregon wrestling program will celebrate 40 straight years of winning seasons with a reunion at the OSAA State Wrestling Championships.

The reunion and social will be held the Red Lion Convention Center in Portland on Feb. 26, immediately following the semifinals of the state tournament at 8 p.m.

Former SOU wrestlers and friends of the program are all encouraged to attend the event. Former SOU coaches Bob Riehm and Bob Bergen and current head coach Mike Ritchey will host the event and dress is casual and the event will be family friendly.

RSVP is not essential, but those wanting to can RSVP to Ritchey at ritchey@sou.edu.

WINSTON

Sign-ups for Winston Babe Ruth Baseball are ongoing. Players age 13-15 wishing to play can pick up sign-up sheets at the Winston Middle School office.

There will be three games per week this season, which ends June 30. A copy of birth certificate is required unless already on file.

ROSEBURG

The Roseburg High School Softball Clinic, for girls in grades 1-8, is scheduled for March 6-7. The clinic will be held at Stewart Park — weather permitting — or in Robertson Memorial Gym or on the Finlay Field turf at the high school.

The offensive and defensive portion session of the clinic will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on March 6. Sign-ups start at 9:30. The session will emphasize hitting, bunting, fielding and outfield play.

The March 7 session, which runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., is for pitchers and catchers. Players should bring tennis shoes or cleats, a glove, a bat, water bottle and sack lunch. Cost is $30 for either session or $50 for both, and includes a T-shirt.

ROSEBURG

The Roseburg High School Booster Club spring banquet and fundraiser is scheduled for March 10 at the Douglas County Fairgrounds.

The silent auction begins at 5:30 p.m., with dinner at 6:30.

This year's program is a roast/reunion for Roseburg head football coach Thurman Bell, who's guided the Indians for 39 years. Bell ranks third on the all-time Oregon high school football win list with 296 victories. His overall record is 296-125-1, highlighted by state titles in 1981, 1990, 1995 and 1996.

Several former Indians who played under Bell are scheduled to attend.

The banquet is the booster club's largest fund raising event of the year. A silent auction and limited oral auction will be held. Proceeds raised at the event will go to student scholarships, and help RHS teachers and coaches purchase items for classrooms and sports.

ROSEBURG

Roseburg Babe Ruth baseball, for ages 13-15, will be having registration from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday at Sunshine Park. Please bring birth certificates. Cost is $85.

Coaches, managers and sponsors are needed. Tryouts will be held on March 6, beginning at 10 a.m.

ROSEBURG

Roseburg Soccer Association is accepting registration for its spring 2010 recreation league. Registration is available on the RSA Web site: www.roseburgsoccer.org.

The discounted registration fees, good until Feb. 27, are $60 per player, or $145 per family (three or more). After Feb. 27 the fees are $70 per player and $175 per family.

In-person registration will be on March 3-4 until 6 p.m. and March 6 from noon to 1 p.m. at the soccer building. The spring recreation season starts on April 10 and ends on June 5. All games are on Saturdays.
