Bing adds two more titles to resume

GRESHAM — Kaylin Bing delivered for the Roseburg High swim team during Saturday night's OSAA Class 6A State Championships.

Roseburg's head coach Gabe Mazurkiewicz had predicted Bing would win both events she was competing individually in — the 50-yard freestyle and the 100 free — and set state records in each event.

“Kaylin is Kaylin,” Mazurkiewicz said. “She is dependable.”

The junior phenom, now a six-time state champion, turned out to be very dependable, earning two more titles to match her coach's predictions. But Bing couldn't quite set the OSAA record — at least for both events.

In Bing's first event, the 50 free, she outpaced her competition by half a body's-length by the turn and touched the wall a half-second ahead of the next swimmer. Bing swam the 50 free in 23.14 seconds to erase the previous record of 23.15 held by Sue Habernigg of Lake Oswego. The record stood since 1981.

Kara Stranski of St. Mary's swam a 23.68 for second and Amy Wiley of Lakeridge clocked 23.76 for third.

The 100 free was an even more lopsided victory for Bing, who led by her full 5-foot-10 frame and turned in a 50.44 at the wall. The time was good enough to win the event by two full seconds, but still fell short of the 6A and OSAA records of 50.11 held by Laura Miller of David Douglas set in 2009.

“I'm really, really excited that I was able to accomplish it (winning back-to-back titles three years in a row),” Bing said. “And even though my times weren't my best, I don't have anything to complain about.

“Besides, records are meant to be broken,” she continued. “Someone will come along and break any records I may set. I try not to put much weight on setting records.”

Bing had a hand in 76 of Roseburg's 87 points as a team by winning two individual events and swimming a leg in two relay races — 200 medley and 400 free.

In the 200 medley relay, the quartet of senior Alex Bing, senior Molly Moore, Kaylin Bing and senior Jennifer Lund placed fourth in 1:51.45. The 400 free relay team of junior Melissa Lund, Moore, sophomore Rachel Murphy and Kaylin Bing also placed fourth in 3:40.96.

The other 11 points came from Alex Bing, who placed 10th in the 100 breaststroke, and the 200 relay team of Cally Tovey, Melissa Lund, Alex Bing, and Jennifer Lund, who placed ninth.

The boys' 200-medley relay team of John Bing, Corey Williams, Justin Becherer, and Jesse Archambault, came into the finals poised to take the state title after swimming a 1:40.19 in the preliminary round.

The opening leg had Roseburg in fifth, but after the second and third legs, the Indians were in first by two one-hundredths of a second. As the swimmers of the last leg hit the water, disaster struck after a false start on an exchange disqualified Roseburg and awarded the state title to Grant.

“Frankly, I don't know what happened,” Mazurkiewicz said. “Personally, I did not see a false start. I was watching and after 35 years of coaching, you would think I know what to look for. I didn't see it.”

The DQ dropped Roseburg from first in the team rankings and ended any hopes of a team title, Mazurkiewicz said.

The boys still managed to place fifth with 85 points. Grant took the team title with 104 points. Had Roseburg not been disqualified, the Indians would be hoisting the championship banner.

The two other relay teams — 400 free and 200 free — came in ranked fifth and third, respectively. But both foursomes took second, giving the Indians 52 much needed points. Seniors Justin Becherer, Corey Williams, and Archambault, and junior John Bing swam all three relays.

In other events, Williams placed second in the 100 breast, swimming a 58.46, and John Bing turned in a fourth-place, 1:44.83 finish in the 200 free.

“It would be a disservice (to these athletes), if I didn't mention all of them,” Mazurkiewicz said. “They have all done a fantastic job. It has been a good meet.”

The complete results from the meet will be published in Monday's News-Review.
