Of Winchester, Oregon, died Thursday evening, February 18, 2010, at Mercy Medical Center in Roseburg after a brief illness.
Mike was born on August 28, 1931, in Myrnam, Alberta, Canada, to parents, Samuel and Mary Caruk Paley. His father came from Ukraine in 1912 at the age of 14 with his parents and other siblings looking for a new life. Mike's mother was also Ukrainian and the family language was Ukrainian until Mike began grade school. Mike was proud of his heritage and loved to speak the language with family and friends. Mike was a member of the Roseburg Seventh-day Adventist church, and had attended church all his life.
The family moved from the farm in Myrnam to Vancouver, BC. when Mike was 14 years old. Mike continued his education there, graduating from Cloverdale High School. He began working as an apprentice to a local builder in British Columbia, and after moving to California with wife, Pearl and three children in 1963 he continued to hone his skills for his career as a builder first in custom homes then commercial buildings--mainly convalescent hospitals.
Mike purchased a farm in Lookingglass near Roseburg,Oregon in 1976 following a divorce from Pearl. He continued to work in the Napa, California area during the week, flying on the weekends to the landing strip across the road from his farm. In 1994 Mike suffered a stroke and had to quit working. Although he had limitations from the stroke he was fiercely independent and amazed family and friends by how much he could do.
In 1998 Mike married Geraldine (Geri) Hanson Parker in Roseburg, Oregon. He sold the farm shortly after, but turned their new home into a mini farm by planting fruit trees and berries, and lots of tomatoes each summer.
Mike loved his family and he leaves his beloved wife, Geri of Winchester, Oregon; his son, Marlon (wife, Debbie) Redlands, California; daughter, Lauren (Melody) McGilchrist (husband, John) Marietta, Georgia; son, Darren, Loma Linda, California; daughter, Heather Brown (husband, Matt) Fallbrook, California; step-daughter, Cathy Berglund (husband, David) Berkeley Springs, West Virginia; sister, Marge Haluschak (husband, Paul) Abbotsford, British Columbia; four grand children, four step-grandchildren; multiple nieces and nephews and many friends. We look forward to a grand reunion with Mike when Jesus comes.
Funeral services are scheduled for Friday, February 26, 2010, at 3 p.m. at the Roseburg Seventh-day Adventist Church. Contributions may be made to Loma Linda Broadcasting Network, Drawer A, Loma Linda, California 92354, or to the charity of your choice.
