Roseburg boys bowl over competition

The wrestling team wasn't the only Roseburg High School sports team winning a state championship last weekend.

The varsity boys bowling squad came out on top in the 16-team high school state tournament, contested Saturday and Sunday at Valley Lanes in Beaverton.

The Indians defeated Liberty of Hillsboro, Mazama of Klamath Falls, Centennial of Gresham twice and Grants Pass en route to the title. Roseburg downed Centennial, which came through the loser's bracket, in the finals after beating the Cavemen in the semifinals.

Roseburg was seeded second behind Grants Pass after the qualifying rounds, knocking down 6,057 pins in 30 Baker scoring system games. The Cavemen, who finished third, totaled 6,157.

“The boys bowled fantastic ... bowled their butts off,” said Roseburg coach Don Noland. “We were hoping to win. I told them they had the talent to do it, and by God, they did it.

“We worked on their attitudes. They're good bowlers and were making good shots. They just caught fire in the finals.”

The varsity team is comprised of seniors Adam Noland and Loren Smith, juniors Adrian Anderson, Chris Chandler, Dylan Jarvis, Brandon Pettengill and Mason Schaedler, and sophomore John Zech.

The Indians finished second in the Southern Oregon district tournament.

“It's a great feeling. I can't put it into words,” said Adam Noland. “It's my senior year and it's great to finally win something.

“We had a really good mindset going in. We knew if we kept good attitudes we were the best bowlers in the house. We were pretty calm and excited at the same time (heading into the finals).”

One example of Roseburg's clutch performance came against Grants Pass, when Adam Noland picked up a 3-7 pin split after being inserted into the lineup.

“It was my chance to step up and I was so pumped when I picked that up,” Adam Noland said. “That was the happiest feeling ... I was yelling and screaming so loud.”

The Roseburg varsity girls finished in the top 10 in their state tournament. Hidden Valley of Murphy won the team title, North Bend finished second and Grants Pass third.

Roseburg's team consists of Breanna Barraza, Valerie Bean, Jessica Friesen, Whitney Gasner, Courtney Moss, Justine Rhines and Elisha Waddell.
