CORVALLIS — The Sutherlin girls basketball team's string of trophies has come to an end.
Ontario eliminated the Bulldogs from the OSAA Class 4A state tournament this morning, 34-31 in a consolation semifinal game at Gill Coliseum.
The Bulldogs won the 2008 state title and finished third last season, but had a disappointingly short stay in Corvallis this year after falling to Marist, 53-32 in the quarterfinals Wednesday.
Ontario (14-14) will face either North Bend or Cascade on Saturday morning in the consolation game.
The Tigers led 31-23 with 3:16 to play before Sutherlin staged a big rally. Kasse Freeman was fouled while scoring a layup and sank the free throw, then Brooklyn Norman hit a 3-point field goal to pull the Bulldogs within three.
Ontario's Jenny Yano hit a pair of free throws with 57 seconds left and after a pair of turnovers by each team, Freeman scored on a putback with 23 seconds left.
The Tigers missed two free throws with 13 seconds to play, giving Sutherlin a chance to tie. But the Bulldogs couldn't get a good look at a 3-pointer out of a timeout and time expired.
Yano scored a game-high 11 points for the Tigers. Ali Babij had seven points and Crystal Lopez had seven rebounds.
Ontario finished the first half on a 9-2 run to take the lead for good. It extended the lead to 21-14 midway through the third quarter. Consecutive shots by Valerie Gallegos and Babij late in the fourth quarter gave the Tigers their largest lead.
Randi Kostner led Sutherlin with eight points and Norman had seven points to go with 13 rebounds. Both players are graduating seniors.
Poor shooting plagued the Bulldogs for the second straight game as they made only 12 of 49 attempts (24.5 percent). Sutherlin averaged 43 points per game heading into the state tourney.
The Bulldogs finished the season 21-6, their third consecutive campaign of 20 wins or more.
