A St. Patrick's Day dinner and auction hosted by the Roseburg Morning Rotary will help support Rotary efforts to eradicate polio worldwide.
Proceeds from the event, which starts at 6:30 p.m. in the Umpqua Community College student center, will also benefit local community groups supported by the Rotary. These groups include the Family Development Center, Court Appointed Special Advocates, Rose Elementary School, and Operation Homefront. The Rotary also provides funding for youth soccer, scholarships for Roseburg High School students and local food banks.
A cruise to Alaska is among other items going up for auction on Wednesday.
To demonstrate the importance of eradicating polio worldwide — it still exists in parts of India, Africa and Afghanistan — an iron lung will be on display during the event. Iron lungs were large devices used to help mostly young patients breathe during polio epidemics in the U.S. during the 1940s and '50s.
