The OSU Extension Service is offering a Science Camp this month for home-schooled students from the fourth through eighth grades. We are planning to make this the first annual 4-H Douglas County Home School Camp.
The Camp Science Investigations event will be held May 24 through 26 at the OSU Discovery Gardens near Roseburg's River Forks Park. Camp activities will include archery, rocketry, geocaching, science experiments, fly fishing, entomology, horticulture and team sports. These activities are just the highlights; we are planning much more with our local partner agencies and volunteers.
Youth will have the opportunity to learn how to use a GPS or a compass and geocache with their new skills. A local fly fishing club will be joining us to teach fly fishing and fly tying. Youth will also have the option to be involved in a session to explore science experiments through hands-on learning. Or they can venture into building rockets and then launch them to see how far they can go.
During the first hour of the first day of camp, we will also be offering two classes, one for parents and the other for children in kindergarten through third grader. The parent class topic will be either on gardening or food preservation. The K-3 group will take part in an interactive, hand-on session from our Cloverbud Program.
The camp is $25 for the first child in the family, $20 for the second and $15 for each additional child in the family. Registrations must be turned into the OSU Extension Office on or before May 10.
The Oregon 4-H program mission is to help young people learn and grow through a process that builds competency, confidence, connection, compassion and character. 4-H has a learn-by-doing approach that can provide the foundation and the tools for youth to gain life skills and grow. All our programs are consistent with this mission.
This summer's 4-H Resident Camp is from July 6 through 9 and is for children completing grades 4 through 6. Youth do not need to be enrolled in 4-H to participate in our 4-H Home School Day Camp or 4-H Summer Resident Camp.
For more information about these programs, or to register for an event, contact the Douglas County OSU Extension Service at 541-672-4461. Or contact Jodi Smith, 4-H youth forestry instructor, or Teresa Middleton at the same number. You can also visit the Extension website at http://extension.oregonstate.edu/douglas/.
