DIAMOND LAKE — An 85-year-old man from California died after he crashed his car into a tree Wednesday afternoon, police said this morning.

He and his 71-year-old companion apparently had been traveling through the area and had just left the Crater Lake area, Oregon State Police Sgt. David Randall said this morning.

David Emanuel Youngberg of Long Beach was pronounced dead at the scene of the 2:25 p.m. collision, Randall said.

His companion, Jeanine Lucille King of San Diego, suffered a broken leg and was flown by air ambulance to St. Charles Medical Center in Bend.

Last night, King was listed in serious condition and undergoing surgery, Randall said. Her condition was not available this morning.

Randall said Youngberg was driving a 2000 Saturn sedan Wednesday west on Highway 138 East at Milepost 75, about halfway between the turnoffs to Diamond Lake and to Lemolo Lake.

Youngberg drove across the road and off the south side of the highway. The car struck a large tree head-on, Randall said.

A doctor who stopped at the accident scene and medical personnel from Chemult EMS tried to revive the man but were unsuccessful.

Youngberg and King were wearing seat belts and the car's airbags deployed, according to an OSP news release.

The eastbound lane of the highway was closed for about two hours after the crash, Randall said. In addition to OSP and Chemult EMS, U.S. Forest Service and Oregon Department of Transportation officials responded to the crash.
