Friendly rivalry marks Myrtle Creek mayor's race

MYRTLE CREEK - The race for mayor shouldn't provide any explosions. Two candidates are vying for the volunteer position and brimming with compliments for one another.The campaign pits the town's 2010 Man of the Year, Dan Jocoy, against last year's winner, Jeff Messner. When he presented Jocoy with the top citizen plaque in May, Messner praised him as someone who was "involved in every facet of life within our community."Now that they're political rivals, the warm feelings haven't subsided."You have two outstanding citizens who care deeply about the community.
