OSU Extension Spotlight: Hardy and fast-growing, the coast redwood adds vigor to property

Looking for something different? How 'bout coast redwood (sequoia sempervirens)? Opinions are somewhat polarized on the viability of the species in Western Oregon: Either you believe or you don't. Today, redwoods range from the extreme southwest corner of Oregon into Monterey County, Calif. There are three "races" of coast redwoods - the northern, central and southern. Personal experience says the northern "race" has the best chance of survival in Western Oregon, but the verdict is still out on which is best suited for the more northern latitudes.Seedling sources for coast redwood are in relatively short supply, although costs are comparable …
