U.S. Sen. Ron Wyden makes a point Tuesday afternoon during a meeting with The News-Review's editorial board. The Portland Democrat spoke of his plans to introduce in Congress a new timber safety net bill that would provide timber counties with annual payments that remain the same, replacing an expiring four-year law that featured decreasing payments.
Without the assistance brought by the $2.7 billion provided over the past decade by the federal timber safety net, Oregon timber counties would have had trouble providing adequately for basic public services, law enforcement and road repairs.
