The price for News-Review print subscribers to access our website, nrtoday.com, will drop by nearly 50 percent beginning Tuesday. The price break will be even more for those who buy the paper through our EZ pay plan.
A few other changes are coming to the website as well, as the site is upgraded to better serve our readers.
Subscribers who pay for the print edition through the automatic withdrawal plan called EZ pay can now add nrtoday.com and our Epaper for $1 a month. For the other print subscribers, it's $1.95 per month. The Epaper is an electronic version of the print edition that maintains the same format. It can be viewed page by page.
Existing subscribers will see the price lowered automatically and those who have paid in advance will have their subscriptions extended based on the new lower cost.
Those who would like to add the online version at the new price may do so by subscribing online or by calling 541-672-3321.
The price for those who subscribe only to the electronic editions remains $7.95 per month.
A new option has been added for those who access the website only occasionally. A single-day pass can be purchased for $2.
The News-Review instituted a subscription for its online news nearly one year ago and sales of the subscriptions exceeded expectations with about 1,400 households signing up.
The News-Review continued to look for ways it could cut the costs of maintaining its website so it could reduce the price for subscribers. One of the changes will be an alternative commenting system. Instead of paying a vendor that provides the mechanism for readers to comment on individual stories, letters and columns, nrtoday.com will now offer a live chat room where readers can discuss the news and commentary of the day.
The chat room will appear on the front page under the headline Umpqua Chat. It will be a more interactive experience for those who are commenting on stories. It will replace the current comment system, which has been used regularly by only about 20 users.
Another change for the better is the streamlining of the log-in process. Members previously had to sign in as a member of the website and then sign in again as a subscriber. The “Members' Hub” is being eliminated and is being replaced by a single log-in appearing in the upper right-hand corner of the web page.
Readers of nrtoday.com will continue to see many aspects of the site offered for free. Breaking news that affects people's lives will continue to be free, along with several other aspects of the website: obituaries, classified ads, one news story each day, weather forecast, calendar, reader photos, news from The Associated Press, spelling bee words, contests and more.
If you experience any problems subscribing, please call our circulation department at 541-672-3321 or email us at customerservice@nrtoday.com.
