The streets of Roseburg are snowless this month. Fog and maybe rain are forecast for Sunday. A white Christmas seems unlikely.
Still, a winter wonderland is in effect as snow flurries blanket windows all over the city.
The difference between reality and appearances is Roseburg resident Stephani Bastian.
Bastian, 48, owns a sign and graphic business, S.M. Bastian Signs. This time of year, she's busy painting winter scenes on windows.
“It's a tradition. Christmas is my absolute favorite time of year,” she said. “When December comes, everybody knows it's window time.”
In freezing or close to freezing weather, Bastian paints mountains, trees and snowflakes. Windows at 40 or so businesses around the city display her art.
Bastian said she wasn't able to get to everyone who wanted their windows painted.
“I was so booked up, I ran out of time,” she said this week. “Whoever I didn't get to this year will be first up next year.”
Video Games Plus in the 1100 block of Northeast Stephens Street has had Bastian's designs on its storefront for years. This year, Bastian painted each character from the popular smart phone game Angry Birds.
“She always tries to do something fun and unique that makes our business standout,” Video Games Plus manager Kris Robinson said.
At the Del Rey Cafe in the 5600 block of Northeast Stephens Street, each employee is represented by a snowman. Del Rey manager Ryan Mack said Bastian's art always receives positive comments from customers.
“She does a phenomenal job,” he said. “It's very personal. You just give her a few ideas, and she goes with it.”
Bastian has painted windows for 32 years. She started in downtown Klamath Falls as a high school student.
“Every Christmas, wherever I have lived, I've painted windows,” she said.
Aside from Klamath Falls and Roseburg, she has painted windows in Lebanon, Glendale and Azalea.
Bastian said the number of years she has invested has allowed her to fine-tune her art. She said each business takes one to two hours to finish. After the holidays are over, a window cleaner removes the art.
“If a storm comes, it's not going to wash away,” she said.
