Storm-related problems continue to pop up in Douglas County, with Roseburg's water system springing a leak and rocks blocking one lane of Highway 42 at the Douglas and Coos county line.
Roseburg residents were asked late Friday afternoon to conserve water while police and public works crews search for a leak causing 1,000 gallons a minute to drain from the city's waterlines.
The loss of water is causing levels in reservoirs to drop, according to the city. Because of swollen river conditions, the water treatment plant can't treat enough water to compensate for the lost water.
Anyone with information that might pinpoint the leak should call the water treatment plant at 541-492-7030.
The city offered several tips for pinching on water:
— Turn off water while brushing teeth or shaving.
— Only use dishwashers and clothes washers when they're full.
— Dishes don't have to be rinsed off before being put in most dishwashers.
— Keep a jug of water in the refrigerator instead of running a faucet until drinking water is at the right temperature.
On Highway 42, the Oregon Department of Transportation announced shortly after 5 p.m. Friday that the highway was blocked. Crews were on scene removing rocks. ODOT said it could not estimate when the highway would reopen, but at 6:45 p.m., the agency announced one lane of the highway had been reopened. Delays of up to 20 minutes can be expected as flaggers control traffic.
The highway had been blocked earlier in the day by a landslide.
