Florene Elizabeth Tucker Archer was born February 13, 1917, in Omak, Washington, and passed away February 3, 2012, ten days before her 95th birthday. Her parents were Harry Cleveland Tucker and Frances Electa Hobart Tucker. Florene was the youngest of their five children. Just before her first birthday, her father was killed in a railroad accident. Her mother took the five children to her father's home in Illinois, where she met and married William Wright. The family returned to Omak, and three more daughters were born.
In 1935, Florene graduated from Omak High School and in 1936 she met and married James Bernice Archer. They were married 51 years when he died of complications from a stroke in 1987. During their married years they lived in many Washington and Oregon mill towns where her husband was a saw filer. After starting their married life in northeastern Washington, they lived in many Oregon towns. They lived in Kinzua and Vanport, two Oregon towns that no longer exist. They also lived in Albany, Tillamook, Roseburg, Oakland and Medford. A few years after her husband died, Florene and her daughter Donna June moved to Florence, and finally to Eugene-Springfield.
Florene was a good mother and homemaker, chocolate chip cookies being her specialty. Because Jim was the consummate builder/re-modeler, she learned to cook her way around construction projects. She was an active member of the United Methodist Church wherever she lived. In various home towns she worked on election boards, belonged to Rebekahs, enjoyed garden clubs, and joined OSU Home Extension chapters. She enjoyed crossword puzzles and reading biography and history. She didn't watch much TV, but she religiously supported the Mariners! She liked Little House on the Prairie, Lawrence Welk and I Love Lucy. At Sheldon Oaks and Sweetbriar she loved winning candy and nickels at Bingo.
She especially enjoyed being a grandmother, great-grandmother and great great-grandmother, gathering her flock for every celebratory occasion. She loved to travel with her daughter and granddaughters and especially enjoyed her last "big" trip to Hingham, Mass., birthplace of her maternal Hobart ancestors. The last few weeks of her life, she was lovingly cared for by her granddaughter, Deanna.
Florene was pre-deceased by her husband, her three brothers, one sister, one half-sister, and a daughter-in-law, Romaine Archer. She is survived by half-sisters Kay Babcock and Alma Carlton of Yakima area Washington; her children, twins Donna June Darling of Eugene and Jerry Archer of Medford, Jim Archer of Florence, and Joan Forster (Ken) of Salem, OR. and Rancho Mirage, CA; five grandchildren and two step-grandsons, Deanna Jacobson (Don) of Springfield, Deanise Mulhollen (Richard) of Jacksonville, Steve Archer of Medford, Jennifer Archer of Springfield, Michelle Momeny (Ryan) of Camas, WA., Todd Johnson of Oklahoma, and Greg Johnson of Canby; five great-grandchildren and five step-great-grandchildren, Megan Delack of Roseburg, Amanda Scott (Tony) of Eugene, Brian Mulhollen (Summer) of Pollock Pines, Calif., Jared Mulhollen (Amy) of Central Point, Kathleena McCollum Prospect, OR, Calvin, Lauren, Taylor and Joseph Johnson of Oklahoma, and Elizabeth Johnson of Canby; and nine great great-grandchildren, Meara Stufflebeam, Emma, Jacob and Lily Scott, Ethan, Natalie and Abigail Mulhollen, Gwyneth Mulhollen, and William Fath.
Graveside services are being held in Medford on Wednesday, February 8, 2012, 1:00 p.m. at Siskiyou Memorial Park. A celebration of her life is planned for summer at her granddaughter's home in Springfield.
Remembrances in her name may be made to National MS Society, Oregon Chapter, 104 S.W. Clay Street, Portland, OR 97201, or United Methodist Church, Florence, Oregon, 333 Kingwood Street, Florence, OR 97439.
