Former Roseburg Oregon resident, Herbert Arthur Spitzer, age 86, passed away on January 26, 2012, in Spokane, Washington, where he had been living since October 2008. A loving father, he is survived by his three children: Herb Spitzer, Jr., and wife Mary of Roseburg, OR; Barbara Hancock and husband Jim, of Spokane, WA; and Lynda Johnson and husband Ed, of Bakersfield, CA. Also surviving are seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Born February 1, 1925, in Williamsburg, Massachusetts, Herbert also lived in Vermont, Connecticut, Minnesota, North Dakota and California. Herbert served with the Marines during WW II at Guadalcanal and Okinawa. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart.
While living in California, Herbert served as a call firefighter for the Los Angeles County Fire Department from 1958 to 1985. He worked for the Quartz Hill County Water District beginning in 1956 as a serviceman. He was promoted to General Manager in 1958, and held that position until he retired in 1985.
After retiring, Herbert moved to Sutherlin, OR, in June, 1985. He later moved to Roseburg in 1991. Much of that time, he lived with his daughter Barbara and her family, moving with them to Spokane, WA, in 2008. Herbert was a past member of Lions Club and The Moose Lodge. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends, gardening, reading, bingo at the Senior Center, and traveling with his soul-mate Peggy Donovan.
The family celebrated Herbert's life during a gathering in Spokane. Arrangements for burial at Roseburg National Cemetery are pending.
