YONCALLA - Hannah Coburn draws a drumstick above her head and brings it down hard on a leather drum. A loud "boom" spreads across the room. Eight other drummers sit around the large American Indian drum, providing softer rhythmic beats between Coburn's hard strikes. The group sings loudly and in unison, chanting over the emphatic drum beats. Loosely referred to as the Yoncalla drum circle, the elementary and high school students meet Mondays after school and every morning before school in the Yoncalla Elementary School cafeteria to perform traditional American Indian music.
