Umpqua Valley wineries recently received recognition at the weeklong 2017 Oregon Wine Experience in Jacksonville, Oregon.

In late August, Abacela, Brandborg, Girardet, Misty Oaks Vineyard, Reustle-Prayer Rock Vineyards and Spangler Vineyards were each awarded with high scores from the panel of judges, which included professional wine judges and authors, certified wine educators, James Beard Award Winners and Master of Wine recipients.

The judges graded each wine based upon their knowledge of the grapes represented, instead of comparing the wines to each other. More than 65 Oregon wineries participated in the event.

“By using this format, a wine had to be a great wine to win a medal,” Stephen Reustle, owner of Reustle-Prayer Rock Vineyards, said. “This panel really knew their stuff and in order for a wine to receive a high medal, the wine had to show them something very special.”

Double Gold Medals were given for those wines that received unanimous gold medal scores by all the judges.

Marc Girardet, co-owner and wine maker for Girardet, said it was great to see his Sangiovese win a Double Gold Medal.

“I feel the caliber of that judging was really good and they have four masters of wine on the judging panel so that sets the bar higher than many of the other judging around Oregon,” Girardet said. “I felt really honored, it was very gratifying to see all these years of hard work pay off.” He had planted the Sangiovese grape vines in 2009 and 2010. Sangiovese, he said, is not a widely-grown grape in Oregon, and Girardet decided to grow the vines and make the wine in an Italian style.

“It’s great to see the judges really appreciated that more of an old-world style,” he said.
