Moms night out at Steamboat Inn chef dinner | Moms

When Dom and I moved down to Roseburg, we were not sorry to be saying goodbye to Portland and Salem.

We both commuted 45 minutes or more to work each day and neither of us really embraced the whole “Keep Oregon Weird” mentality that seems to permeate those cities.

No offense to you Willamette Valley folks, but living up there just didn’t suit The Husband and me.

Saying that, the one thing we do miss about living in a more metropolitan area is the food scene.

We’ve found a couple restaurants here in Roseburg that we like, but the variety is nothing like what you can find in Portland.

And with four kids less than three, we’re kind of blacklisted from the few restaurants here we do enjoy.

Which is why I was pumped when I learned about the Guest Chef and Winemaker Dinner Series hosted by The Steamboat Inn.

This is a program the inn runs from the first Saturday in March to the first Saturday in June and each Friday and Saturday evening they bring in a guest chef and winemaker who will pair wines with whatever menu the chef creates.

Thank you, all things good and sweet, some food culture in the ‘Burg!

Now, normally there is no way we could go to an event like this, but fortunately my birthday was last month and I had a friend volunteer to watch all four kids for us (sucker!) so that Dom and I could do a date night.

So, even though the dinner is in no way a formal thing, I got all dressed up in my new dress.

I even wore make-up and had curled my hair closer-to-Jesus big.

I don’t remember the last time I wore a dress and heels and I had forgotten how nice it could feel to step out of my workout clothes every once in a while.

Once the sitter arrived, we set out for our date night.

We went with a couple who are really good friends of ours so that Dom and I were able to combine date night with actual hang-out time with other adults without having dirty little kids pulling on people or screaming in their ears.

It. Was. Glorious.

The four of us were able to hang out, drink good wine and enjoy some top-notch food.

That night, the guest chef was from Gracie’s in Portland and a local Elkton winery, Brandborg, did the pairings.

We had a four course meal that I won’t dissect too much since anytime I start detailing what I ate it starts sounding like the journal I kept in third grade.

Suffice it to say, everything was fantastic.

What I really enjoyed about the experience was that it was something out-of-the-ordinary and really nice, without feeling pretentious.

I’ve been to similar dinners before where I felt awkward or that I didn’t know how I was supposed to act, but the way the Steamboat Inn does it is just very relaxed.

If you’ve never been up there for this event, I’d highly recommend you go and check it out.
