Sutherlin voters are giving a solid “no” to annexing into Douglas County Fire District No. 2.
Two-thirds of the voters were rejecting the measure, according to results released shortly after 8 p.m.
Measure 10-131 received 1,132 no votes, or 66.67 percent, to 566 yes votes, or 33.33 percent.
Two companion measures necessary to implement Measure 10-131 were passing, but are rendered meaningless by the main measure failing.
The city currently contracts with Fire District 2 for services, but the contract expires in one year. The district and city asked voters to raise property taxes by $1.31 per $1,000 assessed valuation to make Sutherlin a permanent part of the district.
The measure’s defeat makes the future of fire protection in Sutherlin uncertain. The city disbanded its fire department in 2009 and contracted with Fire District 2. Since then, Sutherlin residents have paid less for fire protection than residents in Fire District 2.
The Douglas County Clerk’s Office anticipates updating results at 10 p.m.
