1958 - 2014
The family of Raney Dewey Hall, M.D., mourns his passing on Wednesday, April 23, 2014, in Umpqua, Oregon. He was 55 years old. He was born in Mt. Vernon, Washington, and grew up in California, attending schools in the San Francisco Bay Area, high school in Watsonville, CA, and receiving his Bachelor’s degree from the University of Santa Cruz. He graduated from the University of Southern California (USC) Medical School in 1985. During his career as a physician, he received Board Certifications in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics. Dr. Hall served as an emergency room physician in hospitals throughout the west, including hospitals in California, New Mexico, Texas, Washington and Oregon, giving compassionate care to those in need. A colleague from emergency medicine commented “He was a wonderful man with a heart of gold.”
Raney was loved by his patients for he gave generously of his time, and both listened and provided skilled medical attention. Raney traveled widely, and loved languages and other cultures. He was fluent in both Spanish and Russian, having studied medicine in Mexico before returning to the US to complete his medical education at USC. During his life he traveled widely, living in Mexico, Turkey, and Russia, and traveling in Central and South America - including Argentina, Chile, Columbia, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Panama, and Ecuador. Other journeys took him to India, Bahrain, Thailand, and the Philippines. Raney loved nature, animals, movies, and music. In high school and college he was an avid soccer player and long distance runner. Recently, he made his home in Umpqua, Oregon, where his favorite pastime was walking along the river with his Border Collie, Sasha. Raney was preceded in death by his father, Dr. William Hall; and his stepmother, Cindy Richards, both of Palo Alto, CA. Raney is survived by his mother, Dr. Clara Johns; sisters, Diana (Tim) Hall, Mt. View, CA; Dr. Linda (Quentin) Hall, Walnut Creek, CA; and Dr. Marcia (Donald) Hall, Umpqua, OR; brother, Jeff Hall, JD of Santa Cruz; cousins: Dr. Sandra (Ray) Drake, Menlo Park, CA; and Karl (Carol) Drake, Palo Alto and Poughkeepsie, NY; nephews and nieces: Nicholas Noble, (Melia) of Umpqua, OR., Ian and Sara Hall of Santa Cruz, CA., Elise Hall, of New Zealand, and their mother, Wendy Molin, of Santa Cruz, Ca. His intelligence, gentle nature, sensitivity, and quirky humor will be terribly missed by all who knew him. He was a gentle and truly kind human being.
