Wide load coming through Douglas County tonight

Motorists traveling on Interstate 5 through Douglas County late tonight can expect delays while an oversized load carrying a gate for a California hydro dam passes through.

Between 10:45 p.m. and midnight, northbound traffic may be delayed up to 45 minutes while southbound traffic will be delayed approximately 30 minutes, according to the Oregon Department of Transportation.

Flaggers will warn drivers of the delays at on-ramps between Sutherlin at Cottage Grove.

The truck and trailer is 142 feet long. The 23-foot-wide gate reaches into two travel lanes. It can only be driven on I-5 at night.

The dam gate will travel through a construction zone south of Cottage Grove where the travel lanes are restricted to 19 feet in width.

Northbound traffic will be held while the gate is driven south at speeds of 20 to 30 mph through the 7-mile work zone.

The load is bound for the Folsom Dam on the American River northeast of Sacramento. This is the fifth of 10 gates that will travel south through Douglas County this summer. One went through June 18.
