Saving limbs, saving lives

Virginia Scheffer suffered for more than 10 years from leg pain she thought was caused by pressure on her sciatic nerve. Something was wrong with Scheffer’s legs, but the trouble was in her veins. Scheffer, a diabetic, suffered from critical limb ischemia. Plaque and blood clots clogged her veins. Her legs were starved for blood and oxygen. Amputation is a common treatment — to the horror of Dr. Howard Feldman, whose business it is to save limbs. “People should be terrified of amputation,” said Feldman, founder of the Interventional Cardiology Program at Mercy Medical Center’s Shaw Heart Center in Roseburg. …
