County jobless rate inches up

The News-ReviewDouglas County's 7.6 percent unemployment rate in October was nudged upward from an annual low in September, chiefly by a drop in retail and service sector employment.The rate remained six-tenths of a percent lower than the 8.2 percent rate recorded in October 2001.The number of people looking for work in Douglas County, 3,397, is up by 40 from September, but down by 180 from October 2001, according to the Oregon Employment Department.The jobless rate statewide matched the upward trend in Douglas County to reach 7 percent in a flat but stable economy, officials said.The statewide seasonally adjusted unemployment rate …
