Two credit unions with deep local roots are merging. As of Dec. 31, Western Cascade Federal Credit Union and Dougco Schools Federal Credit Union will become Cascade Community Federal Credit Union. Western Cascade was established in 1958 to serve county, city and state employees, while Dougco Schools opened in 1948 as a school employees credit union and originally operated out of a shoebox kept under a member's staircase.Faced with an increasingly competitive environment, the institutions determined that "the two of us were kind of logical partners," said Gretchen Koester, Western Cascade chief executive.
