Southern Oregon Wine Institute gets $1.25 million federal grant

Umpqua Community College has received a $1.25 million federal grant to equip the Southern Oregon Wine Institute and help graduates and would-be winemakers start businesses, the U.S. Commerce Department announced Thursday. "This is great validation that what we're doing is helping the economic growth in Southern Oregon," the institute's director, Chris Lake, said today.Lake said the institute's Danny Lang Teaching, Learning and Event Center, which is scheduled to be completed at the end of October, will be able to produce up to 3,000 cases of wine a year, which is far more than students will make.The federal funding will allow …
