Ore. school bus driver hurt in crane collision

HILLSBORO, Ore. — An Oregon school bus driver has been hospitalized for observation after a crash involving his bus and a commercial truck hauling a crane.

The Hillsboro School District says the driver had just dropped off students and was headed to the bus barn Thursday morning.

A police spokesman in the Portland suburb said 64-year-old John Hummel of Forest Grove complained of neck and shoulder pain. Lt. Mike Rouches tells The Oregonian (http://is.gd/WRSkXr) that the crane smashed the driver’s side of the bus, pushing it partially onto its side.

It took firefighters 20 minutes to free Hummel.

Police identified the truck driver as 49-year-old Gary Whitener of Aumsville. No citations have been issued.
The crash remains under investigation.
