The Fourteenth Amendment of the Constitution grants protection for “any persons ... born or naturalized” the right of “equal protection of the laws.” While this Amendment was written in the context of extending human rights to formerly enslaved peoples after the Civil War, that hasn’t been its only application. By reading these words, one can deduce that our rights as Americans begin not at conception, or implantation, or viability, but rather upon being born or naturalized here in the United States.
