It has been three years since I led the first Richard Sommer Memorial Hike to the top of Mount Thielsen and I still think of Richard every time I prepare for the hike at the end of September. In 2009, Umpqua Watersheds hosted a Richard Sommer Memorial Hike to the top of Mount Thielsen and I was honored to be one of the hike leaders, after having climbed the 9,182-foot peak with Richard so many times.
