A Roseburg woman’s shackles wouldn’t have been visible to jurors, but they still would have interfered with her right to stand trial with the dignity of a person presumed innocent, according to an appeals court. The Oregon Court of Appeals last week overturned the 2010 conviction of Sherie Wall, who pleaded guilty to drunken driving after being ordered to wear leg restraints during her pending trial. In a unanimous decision, the three-judge panel ruled that Wall’s leg restraints, though hidden by clothing, would have compromised a fair trial.
