WINSTON — Voters picked Fred Steiner, a retired Roseburg Forest Products shop steward, to fill the Ward One position on the Winston City Council, while retaining Sandy Lipphardt as the Ward Two councilor.
Steiner topped John Parker Jr. for a seat that is being vacated by Ken McGinnis, who chose not to run. McGinnis is the chief of the Winston-Dillard Fire District.
Steiner received 52 percent of the vote, according to election results released late Tuesday. He held a 37-vote lead, 338-301, over Parker.
Lipphardt, the owner of Sandy’s Corner Booknook, received 54 percent of the vote to hold off a challenge from James Rusnak.
Lipphardt, who has been on the council for more than three years, had a 75-vote lead, 414-339.
Mayor Sharon Harrison was uncontested in winning another term.
