Energy Spotlight: Irrigation system lubricates path to savings

Rick and Brenda Epp of the Wild Roses Ranch near Lookingglass now irrigate their hay fields with less water, electricity, and labor. They did this by installing a custom-designed K-Line irrigation system. Parallel mainlines were buried. Stationary hydrants were positioned throughout the field. From the hydrants, water is pumped through above-ground tubes and sprinklers 50 feet apart. The tubes are made of tough, flexible polyethylene. Each sprinkler is protected inside a molded plastic pod. The heavy, flat-bottomed pod looks like a kettle with no lid and keeps the sprinkler upright.
