An Oregon State Police sergeant and senior trooper have been honored for rescuing and comforting a man they found in the snow last February in northeast Douglas County. Sgt. Dave Randall and Senior Trooper Don Frerichs received the Life Saving Award from the Oregon Peace Officers Association at a banquet Nov. 16 at Spirit Mountain Casino. The man, a military veteran suffering mental problems, had been out in the cold for two days before Randall and Frerichs found him in woods north of Highway 138 East.
