The holiday season has brought an increase in mail thefts, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office warned today. Sheriff’s spokesman Dwes Hutson warned people to be careful when mailing items that are valuable or have personal information. Mail theft often increases around holidays, he said. “It’s not necessarily an unusual trend that we’re seeing,” he said. “It’s more a reminder that we’d like people to be aware that these types of things do happen.” Criminals are removing incoming and outgoing mail looking for gift cards, credit cards, bank statements, Social Security numbers and other information, he said.
