Judge ensures state keeps timber sales on hold

A federal judge has halted 11 state timber sales while considering a lawsuit filed by three conservation groups contending the logging plans will harm the marbled murrelet, a threatened sea bird that nests in coastal forests. In a preliminary injunction issued last week, U.S. District Court Judge Ann Aiken in Eugene wrote that Cascadia Wildlands, the Center for Biological Diversity and the Portland Audubon Society have shown they are likely to win the lawsuit, though a spokesman for the Oregon Department of Forestry and a timber advocate today disputed that the groups have a solid case.
