MYRTLE CREEK — Del Blanchard was a teenager still in school when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor in Hawaii on Dec. 7, 1941. The next day, the principal brought in a radio so students could listen to Franklin D. Roosevelt make his famous “Day of Infamy” speech, asking Congress to declare war on Japan, signaling U.S. entry into World War II.
