Myrtle Creek man hosts ceremony to remember Pearl Harbor Day

MYRTLE CREEK — Del Blanchard was a teenager still in school when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor in Hawaii on Dec. 7, 1941. The next day, the principal brought in a radio so students could listen to Franklin D. Roosevelt make his famous “Day of Infamy” speech, asking Congress to declare war on Japan, signaling U.S. entry into World War II. Blanchard, 84, was joined by others who remembered that infamous day 71 years ago and its consequences for a flag raising ceremony Friday at his home in Myrtle Creek.
