Other voices: Legislature should embrace Kitzhaber’s budget

Gov. John Kitzhaber’s proposed budget for the next biennium, which was unveiled Nov. 30, reflects the priorities and tenor of his third term in office. It focuses on the right tasks: stabilizing schools, taming prison and public pension costs and nurturing the economy. The budget for the two years starting in July 2013 doesn’t offer an immediate solution to education funding or other big issues. But it puts the state on the right path.
