Assistant fire chief’s house burns in Yoncalla; family dog dies

YONCALLA — Firefighter Mike Grimes realized about halfway en route to a call Thursday morning that he was racing to his own house. At 9:22 a.m., a neighbor noticed smoke coming from Grimes’ house in the 600 block of Charles Street in Yoncalla and called 911. The assistant fire chief for North Douglas Fire & EMS has the only two-story house in his neighborhood. When he heard over the radio that a two-story residence was burning in his neighborhood, he said he was sure it was his home. Grimes and a colleague were the second unit on scene. Three agencies …
