A Washington man who grew up in an Oregon timber town and has experience leading small rural libraries will be the new Douglas County Library director. Harold Hayes of Richland, Wash., will replace Max Leek, who retired at the end of September. Interim Director Louise Hughes, a retired library employee, will step down as head of the 11-branch library system when Hayes, 54, takes over Jan. 21.
