Timber harvests on Oregon and California Railroad trust lands can be increased while protecting ecosystems and designating more land for wilderness protection, Gov. John Kitzhaber told Oregon’s congressional delegation Wednesday. In a letter to the state’s seven federal lawmakers, Kitzhaber urged changing how the Bureau of Land Management administers 2.6 million acres in 18 Oregon counties, including Douglas County. The 1994 Northwest Forest Plan has protected ecosystems but has failed to supply enough timber for mills or generate adequate revenue for counties, Kitzhaber wrote.
